Born in Kyoto and raised in Seattle, Emi Meyer started taking piano lessons at age of six. She showed great potential and expanded to jazz to collaborate. Jazz’s spontaneous jams, its synchronization between fingers and voice, and the search for genuine words enticed her to sing her own. Her first self-released album, Curious Creature (2007) garnered much attention and was used in several film soundtracks in the US. In Japan, "Room Blue" was chosen for Single of the Week on iTunes, subsequently propelling the album to #1 on the Jazz chart. She received Best New Jazz Artist on iTunes Japan for 2009.

Recently Emi opened for Yael Naim's Japan tour (2009), who she considers a role-model. She has also written music for major TV commercials in Japan and performed at the country’s largest rock showcase, FUJI Rock Festival (2008, 2009). Previous recognition includes winning the Seattle-Jazz Kobe Vocalist Competition (2007) and performing at the Sundance Film Festival for BMI (2008).

Her latest release, Passport (2010), was recorded with musicians in US, Japan, and Brazil. The lyrics are entirely in Japanese, and the unusual vocabulary and phrasing of the poetry are in a world of their own. These songs take the listener on a journey through jazz, pop, bossa nova, dub and reggae, echoing the adventures she experienced while writing them. Emi continues to create music with an emphasis on the organic process of writing and collaboration.

"Ganbaro Japan!" Goods

Today, we launched a new section called Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Relief in our online store. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Peace Winds America. Please visit our store today!

Japanese Restaurant Week: March 28 (Mon) - April 3 (Sun)

Japanese restaurants in the Pacific Northwest are coming together to support relief and recovery efforts following the devastating earthquakes and tsunamis that struck the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11.

Because the process will be long, participating restaurants have agreed to hold multiple fundraisers to support what will no doubt be years of rebuilding. The project is called Ganbaro Japan!

“Ganbaro”: Let’s toughen it out together.

Although there are many slogans now with the word "Ganbare," which means "toughen it out," we want to say "Ganbaro" instead because we believe that we are in this together with the people in Japan.

All funds raised will be donated to Peace Winds America, the Seattle office for a Japanese NGO with local experience in Japanese disaster relief and recovery and a partner of Mercy Corps. Peace Winds America is pledging that 100% of donated funds will go directly to disaster relief.

Participating Restaurants:
Between March 28th (Mon) and April 3rd (Sun), the following restaurants will donate 10% of their total sales to Peace Winds America for disaster relief in Japan.
